Medigap Basics

Choosing a Medigap policy (Medicare Supplement Insurance) can help you fill the “gaps” in Original Medicare and is sold by private companies. Medigap policies help pay Original Medicare out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Some Medigap policies cover Foreign travel emergency medical care when you travel outside the U.S. that Original Medicare doesn’t. Medigap policies don’t cover your share of the cost under other types of health coverage.

When you have Original Medicare + Medigap policy, Medicare pays its share of the Medicare-approved amount. Then, your Medigap policy pays its share.

All Medigap policies must be clearly identified as Medicare Supplement Insurance. Medigap policies are standardized. Each standardized Medigap policy under the same plan letter must offer the same basic benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it.

Descriptions of benefits offered by each Medigap plan are available in this booklet provided by medicare.gov.
